This is my story

I'm Joff. I live in Brisbane with my family, and I've spent fourteen years as a Registered Nurse

Which is the embarrassing part of this story.

In 2019 I called an ambulance on myself. I was 27, obese and had been experiencing chest pain, and I was a bloke who spent his working life telling other people how to look after their health while quietly failing to look after his own. By 1am I was in a hospital bed being told my blood pressure and my heart murmur were genetic. A script, come back in a few years.

I'm a healthcare worker… but my own health was failing

Nothing about my life at that point was a mystery to me. I knew what was happening to me. I just could not fix it, and I had tried everything you have tried. Yo-yo dieting, training harder, eating less, calorie counting, supplements. I would hold it for a few months and then one slip would turn into a cheat meal every weekend and I would be back where I started, heavier and more certain I was the problem.   I grew up Filipino, where rice is not just food, but a staple in the household. I was a carb addict with a bad relationship with food long before I was a bloke in an ambulance.

My life changed forever

I found the carnivore diet , and more importantly I worked out how to actually stay on it.

Within a year I lost 40kg. The heart disease symptoms went. So did the joint pain, the eczema, the sleep apnoea, the depression. Nearly five years on I have not looked back, and I am in better shape at 34 than I was at 24.

Why I do this

Because I was not a hard case. I was a bloke with everything he needed to know and none of the support to do it, and that is a far more common problem than anyone admits. What changed things for me was not information, it was working out that I could not have a bit of it, and then having a way of eating that never asked me to.

I am not your doctor and I am not acting as a nurse here. What I am is someone who has done this, from where you are standing, and who knows exactly which week it gets hard.
